Here are 5 such photographing tips that will help you the next time you do the photography at a kid’s birthday party.

Capture Expressions & Candids

Children are beautiful little angels who are full of energy and joy, especially when it’s their birthday. You need to keep an eye on them while they run around and do their thing and click some candid photos while they are playing around with their friends. A 24-70mm zoom lens is the recommended kind of doing such photography while indoors. The mode dial should be turned to AV (Aperture Priority) mode, and an ISO 100-800 should be selected. To get a blurred background, a full aperture of f/2.8-f/10 is great. Using a separate flash which is stronger than the built-in flash is recommended.

Get up Close and on the same level

The best time to get a close-up picture of the children is when they are sitting down to open their birthday presents and when they are blowing out the candles on their birthday cake. A birthday album is surely not complete without a proper picture of the birthday kid blowing out the candles. Take a few such photos from the side while focusing on the child’s face. A shallow depth of field should be used as that would enable you to keep the background out of focus.

Keep the shutter speed at 1/160th of a second to keep the picture crisp and sharp while still capturing the smoke trails from the candles. A higher ISO is recommended if the lighting is poor.

Capture the details and the decorations

The parents today put in a lot of effort into decorations and details of a birthday party of their kids. These little aspects of a part are what makes them very special and unique, and thus it is crucial that you record the. You can also be sure that the parents will be euphoric knowing their efforts have not gone unnoticed. The photographs of the detailing of a birthday party convey the feeling of how it was like being in the party to some extent. It is recommended that you take these photos before the guests arrive.

Cherish the memories and pay attention

Apart from focusing on the birthday boy/girl, you should also put some amount of focus on the other children at the party. Capture the moments where the children interact with each other and other moments of having fun with each other. An ISO of 400 is recommended for the poor lighting conditions inside a house and open the aperture to f-2.8-f/4 to allow the light to come in.

Tell a story through your photos.

Birthday parties are a great place to get creative and try out new things. After you are done taking the “must have” photos, broaden your horizon and try to capture expressions and emotions. Capture these emotions and get creative and try to present these emotions with the best possible use of lighting and other aspects in a way the photo expresses the true feeling of the emotions.
